Countering Toxins in the Home With Eco Countertops

When you think about sustainable, healthy and environmentally friendly Green products, eco countertops likely aren’t the first things that come to mind. But did you know that countertops made with certain materials could be harmful to your health and the environment?

Many countertops are made from nonrenewable resources such as petrochemicals and aluminum trihydrate (ATH). Processed from petroleum, petrochemicals tap a finite resource that is energy-intensive and polluting to extract, ship and process. ATH is strip-mined, disturbing large swaths of land.

Granite countertops have gained popularity in recent years, but there is controversy of how much radon they emit. Laminate countertops are resin-impregnated paper glued to particleboard backings that typically have high VOC levels.

Paperstone: Attractive Eco Countertops With a Conscience

Paperstone countertops are made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled paper that is saturated with petroleum free resins containing ingredients like cashew nut shell liquid. The saturated sheets are fused together under heat and pressure, transforming ordinary paper into an extremely strong and durable solid surface material.

Paperstone is VOC free and, unlike granite, contains no radon. Certified ‘food safe’ by NSF, Paperstone is water resistant, heat resistant to 350º and has a class A fire and smoke rating.

Coloured with natural pigments, the attractive countertops come in nine warm, rich colours to complement any décor. Paperstone is an ideal surface material for kitchen counters, bathroom vanities, conference tables and restaurant food prep areas.

EcoInhabit has people who can install Paperstone and do any needed fabricating, such as sizing. Paperstone is available in three Standard Panel Sizes – 5′ X 12′, 5′ X 10′ and 5′ X 8′ – and six Standard Panel Thicknesses – 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″ and 1 1/4″.

Icestone offers a high end beautiful, yet durable countertop made of 100 percent recycled glass in a cement matrix. With a mission to foster a sustainable environment, Icestone products have achieved the prestigious gold level of Cradle to Cradle® certification.

The certification is an eco-label that assesses the design of a product and the practices used in manufacturing that product, including material health, material re-use, renewable energy use, water stewardship and social responsibility.

Icestone surfaces are produced in slabs and need to be fabricated by someone equipped and experienced at cutting marble or granite. Although more difficult to install than Paperstone, the end result is stunning.
